Key Stage 3

During Years 7 and 8 at CBSC (KS3) pupils are divided into 3 equivalent bands; b, c and d.

Pupils are taught together in these bands for English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, DT, Computer Science and Food Studies. In Year 8 this also takes place in Performing Arts, Modern Foreign Languages and History.

In each band pupils are divided into sets 1, 2 and 3 in these subjects.

Pupils are taught in their tutor group in Year 7 for History, Modern Foreign Languages, Performing Arts, Geography, Citizenship, PRE, Art, Extended Tutor Time and for Enrichment.

Pupils in Year 8 are taught in their tutor group in Geography, Citizenship, PRE, Art, Extended Tutor Time and for Enrichment.

Pupils are taught either French or Spanish as their Modern Foreign Language. Spanish is taught in bands b and d, whilst French is taught in band c. Parents who have a preference for their son can raise this at the start of Year 7 as a determinant for the tutor group that their son will be placed in.

Key Stage 4

In Year 9 pupils are divided into 3 equivalent bands; b, c and d for English, Mathematics, Science and PE. Pupils are set in all subjects within these bands except PE. Pupils are also taught in option blocks of E, X, Y or Z dependent on their choices made.

In Year 10 pupils taught as a whole cohort for English. The pupils are set in these subjects from set 1 to set 8. Year 10 is also divided into 3 equivalent bands (b, c and d) for Mathematics, PE and Science. Pupils are set in Mathematics and Science from set 1 to set 3. Year 10 are also taught in option blocks of W, X, D or Y dependent on their option choices made. These subjects are not set according to ability.

In Year 11 pupils taught as a whole cohort for English and PE. The pupils are set in these subjects from set 1 to set 8. Year 11 is divided into 2 equivalent bands (b and c) for Mathematics and Science. Pupils are set in these two subjects within these bands from set 1 to set 4. Year 11 are also taught in option blocks of B, C, X, D or Y dependent on their choices made. These subjects are not set according to ability.
